What People Are Saying About This Dog Toy

Hide-a-squirrel dog toy
I have a dachshund, who is an aggressive chewer. He loves this toy. He will chew extra holes in the trunk to get the squirrels and will run off with the squirrels, which he also will eventually tear up. However, he will play with this toy for an hour at a time (longer when new and without the extra holes). You can buy extra squirrels to replace in the trunk, but he is happy even with the ones he has destroyed being packed back in the trunk. This is an excellent toy to keep your dog occupied and entertained. One word of advice, if you don't want your dog chasing after real squirrels and barking at them every time they come into the yard, you may wish to get one of the other designs, like the hide-a-bee, which my dog also liked, but not as much. I think dogs are programmed to be crazy about chasing squirrels. I bought this for 2 friend's dogs, and they also loved it. One of them sews the holes back up for her lab, so he can continue to enjoy his favourite game of "Where's the squirrel?"

I love this toy. I felt like my dog was bored. I bought this, having seen it years ago at a friend's house. My dog loves it and carries the whole tree trunk around for a while before working on removing the squirrels.
The only thing I don't like about it, is that it was made in Chine, which I try to avoid, because I worry about the materials, the cleanliness of them.
I would purchase it again though. My dog gets great joy from this toy.

My golden retriver got one of these as a puppy and chewed the tree up in one day. However the squirrels hung around for quite a while. In fact, the third one bit the dust after nearly two years. This was her favorite alltime toy. That one was from Petsmart for about $ 22 . I got this one for $ 9.74 and can't wait to give it to her for Christmas . Seems to be a little better made and she is now 3 so maybe it will last a little longer than the first.

Our 24-lbs Australian Shepherd mix, Sebastian, is about seven months old. We had ordered the Kyjen Magic Hat with Rabbits, which arrived before this. Within three minutes a rabbit was already unattached. So much for being durable. I was a little uneasy about this toy since it's from the same company and Sebastian wasn't even playing that rough, but it arrived today and it's still intact! I ordered the jumbo, which is a great choice for a medium-sized dog. He loves the squirrel stump more than the actual squirrels! Awesome toy to engage your dog. Hopefully this company works on making their toys a little stronger, though.

So... we just opened this toy tonight and it instantly became a favorite for our mini poodle/springer spaniel mix. We ordered the large toy and there are so many ways to entertain him. He has played more so with the tree stump tonight. He enjoys "hunting" for the squirrels and squeaking them around the house. The squeakers on these squirrels are superb.

Our baby is 25 lbs and we probably could have ordered a jumbo size. He is a bigger chewer so the squirrels are a little small for him and he is enjoying the stump immensely.

I have a feeling when this toy wears out that we will continue buying it. It is that much fun for him.

We purchased the 'large' size for Oliver (our 1.5 yr old male Maltese). Followed instructions: (ie leave squirrels in dirty laundry basket for a day so human scent can be absorbed.) and stuffed squirrels into 'tree trunk' and tossed to Oliver.

He went nuts for the toy. Immediately 'dove' his face into the 'trunk' and worked his little tail off to get the squirrels. He succeeded fairly quickly (a minute or so) and I took the loose squirrel away and he went for more.

In short, he LOVES this toy.

We suggest removing squirrels from dog's possession after they extract them as your pet may tend to treat them like chew toys - or worse try to 'kill' them. They toy seems reasonably well made - but like any plush toy it will eventually succumb to rough play.

We spoke with the manufacturer and they told us that they made replacement squirrels only for the "large' size and that was one of the reasons we selected it.

We use the toy selectively - and let Oliver play with it only when we are around to supervise.

Based on feedback from others - it seems we are not alone in having a good experience with the product.

Strongly recommend this as a great addition to your pet toy arsenal. Our only feature 'wish' is that it would be a bit tougher for him to get the squirrels out.

I have never had a dog toy that lasts but they are fun for a while anyway. My dog is very good at getting them out of their box. I leave the toy in his pen sometimes when I leave and usually when I get back home they are all scattered in his pen, so he has some entertainment while I'm out. If I even pick one of the squirrels up he is funs over to get it. The toy is holding up pretty well considering I have a dog that is pretty rough on them (no pun intended). This toy is a lot of fun to watch. This is a decent toy! My dog loves those stupid little squirrels.

It's great to have such an interactive toy for the puppy! It keeps her busy and holds her interest. She carries it around the house with her nose stuck down in the house. She'll lay down with it and get the first squirrel out, then focus on the next. She'll spend some time chewing on the squirrels, but doesn't destroy them. Sometimes she'll carry 1 squirrel around the house and play with it only, after she's achieved her mission of getting all the squirrels out of their house.

The squeakers aren't very loud, which is an added bonus! We did what it suggested on the box, by placing the toy in with a basket of dirty laundry for 12 hours. Sounds gross, and I can't say for sure if it helped, but she does love the toy. It's pretty funny seeing the squirrels laying around the house and knowing what fun she's had with them. My husband told me this morning she took one with her when she went out to potty!!

Our older beagle mix would get the first squirrel out, then try to destroy it, so we keep it away from him. I knew going in that he is a toy destroyer, so this was to be expected. But we can say that he loves the toy, too, because the more time the puppy spends with it is less time she spends picking at him!

Destroyed in minutes
our dog is a plush toy killer - we learned it with this toy. within minutes the tails were off, then the feet, and then squirrel stuffing guts galore. if your dog is like ours, stay away from wasting your money.

This toy was not a challenge to my dog. Within a few days she ripped it apart and began to eat the stuff inside. I had to throw it away.

We have a German shepherd that loved the Hide-A-Bee that we had purchased a while back, but it was getting kind of worn so I decided to try the Hide-A-Squirrel. This one did not hold up near as well. In fact, after just a few weeks, our dog has already ripped it apart. The squirrels are still in good shape because he really doesn't like those as well as their house. The dog likes it, it just doesn't seem to be made as well as the Hide-A-Bee.

My dog absolutely loved this....for the 30 minutes it took him to destroy it. I have an 80lb Husky who LOVES squeaky toys. He can get really destructive so I try to find toys that will provide him some mental stimulation. He had a great time getting the squirrels out and chewing on them but he ripped up their "house" within 30 minutes. If your dog is not destructive like mine then this is definitely an awesome toy for them.
